iOS 5.0.1 - The "NON-A5" Untethered JB is FINALLY here

Oh what a happy day it is for most people.  Well for every iOS owner except for people who own the iPhone 4s & the iPad 2.  The Long awaited Untethered JB for iOS 5.0.1 is here.  Thanks to @pod2g and the DevTeam for making this happen.  Please keep reading for more information on the JB straight from the Dev-Team's Blog.

The following info came directly from http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

@pod2g has created a terrific gift for iOS fans — an untethered 5.0.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices!

Here are the basic steps for how to get it:
  • The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G
  • If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now!  The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1  If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW!  See the guides at places like iClarified.com if you don’t know how.  Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.
  • If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam.  The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.
  • Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration.  If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup!  You will most likely get into a reboot cycle.  Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.

SOPA - Evil or a Necessity?

WTF is SOPA?

SOPA = Stop Online Piracy Act

The TRUTH about SOPA.

Read the truth about SOPA, and you will understand why 14 of the largest companies in the Technology industry have backed out of supporting it.  These companies include: Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Intel, Sony, AOL, eBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo & Zanga.

Truth is… you’re either a pirate, or you’re not.  But before people jump on the bandwagon, you need to know the facts.

Don’t be fooled by what SOPA is.

SOPA will tell the public that it is the Stop Online Piracy Act.  This, for some, sounds like a good idea.  At first glance, the bill sounded good.  Stopping all piracy, blocking questionable piracy sites, and helping the companies keep making money off of their products.

But what the SOPA bill is actually doing is allowing the Government to become a true “Big Brother”.  And us as citizens are letting this happen.

SOPA not only will attempt to stop piracy, but it also allows the government to control EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON THE INTERNET.  With SOPA, “the government or law enforcement could seize and shut down any WebSite that held questionable content or broke the law”.  It is the “questionable content” part that should bother you!

So, for example:  If the Government decides they don’t like a YouTube Video, they can BAN it (aka: Delete it) from ever existing.  That’s just plain sad.  SOPA gives the Government the power to take anything off of the internet they want.

Another Example:  Let’s say your child is doing a paper for school on World War II.  Sure, the information will be out there to write a report, but if the Government decides there are Pictures, Videos, or any kind of content out there that they don’t want you to see or know about, they can blacklist the website from the Internet.  (In laymen terms, it will just cease to exist.)

Another Example:  School districts are already toying with the idea of replacing school books with iPads.  Sounds great right?  The Evolution of Technology.  But with SOPA, the things you learned from books in school might no longer be there for our future “online” generations.  If you want to know what happened with prohibition or how/when the U.S.  Stock market crashed in 1929, you might not be able to.  Not if the government decides that it doesn’t want you to read about it online.

Another Example:  Website creating, Blogging, tweeting & Facebook would be monitored 24/7.  If you had something to say about the President of the US, or how the government isn’t doing what they should be doing… You CAN’T.  You really think the government won’t monitor and “delete” any derogatory comments or  news stories about them?  Think again.

Now you might read these examples and say, whatever.  You might read these examples and think that the Government will never go that far…  WOULDN’T THEY???  The Government is still conducting its private “business” today.  If you think that they aren’t doing “business” that is written on pieces of paper that don’t exist, about plans and operations that don’t exist, THINK AGAIN.  What we are doing by letting SOPA pass, is giving the government a BILL passed by U.S. Congress as an excuse to do what they feel is right when it comes to Censorship.

Am I getting through to you now?  SOPA, is BAD.  Yea, stopping piracy might be a good thing.  Think about it this way.  If you wrote a piece of software, and wanted to sell it for $100 per copy, but found out it was available for free on the internet with in the first week of it hitting the shelves, you would be pissed to… But to give the government full control of what we see and listen to…  Isn’t that the definition of a Dictatorship?  Our constitutional rights & Freedom of speech would be a thing of the past.

I have had this image on my BLOG since day 1.
It's sad to see that, with each passing day, it is becoming more & more true.

iOS 5 is now available to the public!

Are you ready for iCloud? Are you ready for iOS 5?

Some of us have had the privilege of using iOS 5 for a week now.  The GM was released last Tuesday at the “Lets Talk iPhone” apple event.

Personally, I think it has some great features.  My favorites I have already covered in previous posts... But here are my top 3...

You can set custom tones for every sound your iDevice makes.

The notification center which takes all your alerts for every app, and puts them into one convenient place.

When you get text messages, you no longer get the text alert in the middle of your screen, completely interrupting what your doing at the time.  Your device now just shows a small alert at the top of the screen, then disappears to the notification center to remind you about it later.

*** Just be for warned.  There is ONLY A TEATHERED jailbreak out right now for the GM.  Now that the final version of iOS 5 is here, there is not telling if that same JailBreak will work or not.  So… If your planning to upgrade, but can’t live with out your jailbreak… Then wait.  TEATHERED jailbreaks SUCK!!! ***

How To Install iOS 5 GM Right Now Without Developer Account

iOS 5 GM was released two days ago once Apple finished its media event where it announced the iPhone 4S. iOS 5 public version will be available starting from October 12 for all device but in case you can’t wait until that date, we’re here to help you to get iOS 5 GM on your device right now without need to developers account.

At first you will need to back up your iOS devices with iTunes in case of a problem happened. Once you back up your data, now you’ll need to download iOS 5 GM firmware file (use Google for this). Also download and install iTunes 10.5 beta 7 from here.

Now open iTunes then to your iPhone settings and hold down the option key on a Mac or the shift on Windows and click the Restore button. Point iTunes to your iOS 5 GM IPSW file you downloaded then wait for iTunes to finish.

Finally, restore your device from your backup to get your data back on the new iOS. It will be rebooted once then you’ll get your device ready to use.
In case you’re a jailbreak fan, you might want to tethered jailbreak iOS 5 GM using redsn0w or sn0wbreeze.

Where the hell is my iPhone 5 Apple???

We have been watching (well, reading actually) a live blog this morning covering the events that are unfolding at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino CA.

Everyone (geeks like me) have been waiting for today.  The day that we hear about the iPhone 5…

Well that shit isn’t going to happen!!!

So what have we learned so far?  Here is a quick iPhone recap of the “let’s talk iPhone” event happing right now at the Apple Campus in Cupertino, CA…

So now it’s official, the iPhone 4 will be followed by and updated phone…..  the iPhone 4s.  That’s right… the 4s.  Like people couldn’t see that one coming.  I mean, you all heard of the 3g and its upgrade, the 3gs right???

Maybe we will see an i5 next year?  Makes sense though if you think about it.  Apple has been doing MAJOR version changes every 2 years…

    • iPhone 2g (original) = 2007
    • iPhone 3g = 2008
    • iPhone 3gs = 2009
    • iPhone 4 = 2010
    • iPhone 4s = 2011
    • iPhone 5 = 2012???

So what's the pricing on the 4s???

    $199 = 8gb
    $299 = 32gb
    $399 = 64gb

Ok.  Here are the key “perks”

    • The A5 chip is now making its way into the iPhone
    • “Dual-core CPU, 2x as fast at CPU tasks. Also dual-core graphics. Up to 7x faster in the previous iPhone. One area you really see it scream is in games.”
    • Data can now download up to 2x as fast. Theoretical max performance used to be 5.8 up and 7.2 down — now doubles to almost 14.4Mbps down.
    • “What’s the new camera on the iPhone 4S like? It starts with an 8 megapixel sensor.”
    •  Increased to 8 hours talk time, damn! “Fantastic battery life.”
    • Second, wireless system: “Our engineering team has worked really hard to advance the state of the art that’s never been done in a phone before. It can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality.”
    •  That’s right Sprint people, you’re FINALLY getting the iPhone. Sorry, T-Mobile people.

So when is it coming out?  Pre-Orders will start on October 7th, and the iPhone 4gs will launch on October 12th.

Finally got back home from Vegas on July 16th, had to update to 4.3.3, then jailbroke it.  I was lucky enough to beat the iOS 4.3.4 & iOS 4.3.5 updates which of course broke the jailbreakme.com exploit...  :-(

iTunes 10.3.1 is now available for download

Apple just released iTunes 10.3 during the WWDC on June 6th.  A lot of users were getting "unknown error (-50)" errors while trying to Sync their iOS devices.  iTunes 10.3.1 is suppose to fix that issue.

As far as 10.3 & 10.3.1 being safe for JailBreakers... I am not 100% sure.  Everything I have read on the Internet is pointing to YES, IT'S SAFE... but don't take my word for it until you have heard it straight from either DEV-TEAM or @MuscleNerd.

Finally got with the times & installed iOS 4.3.3...

Now that it's official, and iCloud beta is out for iOS 4.3.3 via iTunes 10.3... I have been wanting to give it a try.  I have personally been running a JailBroken 3gs on iOS 4.2.1 pretty much ever since it came out.  I have never seen a "GOOD" reason to update; until now.

This was by far the most "TESTING" JB I have ever done.  I started with an iPhone 3gs, JailBroken on iOS 4.2.1.  I tried to use PwnageTool_4.3.3 & PwnageTool_4.3.3.1, with no avail.  YES, I know how to use both, but I just couldn't get it to work right.

I chose PwnageTool.  Not because I only have a Mac to work with, (I have a PC too), but I liked the fact that it allows you to build your own custom Cydia packages that you can build right into your CUSTOM IPSW.  This way you do not have to manually install them one by one later.

What a big waist of time.  The custom Cydia Packages builder seemed to work like a charm... but when I restored my 3gs to the custom firmware, it installed all the packages, but no CYDIA???!!!  Rebooted the device 3 different times....  NO CYDIA.   Launched Winterboard, all it did was close right away....  BULLSHIT!

So long story short, I went back to Winblows 7.  Did a full restore of the OFFICIAL iOS 4.3.3 from Apple.  Then gave redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc16 a try.  It JailBroke my 3GS in about 30, maybe 45 sec.

So long story short, those of you who are worried about trying out redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc16, don't be.  IT WORKS.

BUT BE FORWARNED BEFORE USING ANY JAILBREAK METHOD....

This was taken straight from http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
"ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w!  Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband."

The 4.3.3 untethered JB works on all iDevices that actually support iOS 4.3.3 EXCEPT for the iPad 2.
